Who needs a 1040 schedule SE?

Anyone who has made more than $400 through self-employment  (including farmers) must fill out the IRS form 1040 schedule SE. The IRS will use this information to determine your social security benefits.  In some special cases, you must fill out the form if you are a part of a partnership and receive guaranteed payments.

Are there exceptions to who needs to fill out a 1040 schedule SE?

There are some special exceptions that apply to the following people…

• Ministers
• Members of Religious Orders
• Christian Science Practitioners
• Members of Certain Religious Sects
• U.S. Citizens Employed by Foreign Governments or International Organizations
• U.S. Citizens or Resident Aliens Living Outside the United States
• Nonresident Aliens

What information do you need when you file a 1040 schedule SE? (social security number, etc.)

The 1040 schedule SE form can require many different pieces of information. It really depends on your personal tax situation, and where your income or losses came from. At the very least, you will need:

1. Your contact information such as phone number, full mailing address, etc.
2. Your social security number which will serve as your business’ tax ID
3. Your financial records for the year such as bank statements
4. Your filled out 1040 tax return

Is 1040 schedule SE accompanied by other forms?

Other than your filled out 1040 and other tax forms for the year, your 1040 schedule E form does not need to be accompanied with any other form unless otherwise specified.  Depending on your individual tax situation you may need to include proof of your self-employment income such as bank statements. If additional verification is needed, the IRS will request it by mail.

When is the 1040 schedule SE due?

Your form is due at the same time as your tax return, on April 15 of every tax year.
