Form 990-EZ: Short Form Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax

Continuing with PDFfiller’s review of tax forms, let’s look more at which organizations can take the easy route with the Form 990-EZ.

What is Form 990-EZ?

Form 990-EZ is a short version of the annual reporting return that tax-exempt organizations, section 527 political organizations, and nonexempt charitable trusts file with the IRS. The form gives the IRS an overview of the organization’s governance, activities, and comprehensive financial information. Some members of the public rely on the Form 990-EZ as their primary or sole source of information about a particular organization.

Who must file Form 990-EZ?

A tax-exempt organization may file form 990-EZ instead of form 990 if they have gross receipts less than $200,000 and total assets at the end of the tax year less than $500,000.

What other forms are needed when you file Form 990-EZ?

You have to send form 990-EZ along with a Schedule A form.

When is form 990-EZ due?

The end of the fiscal year determines the deadline by which organizations must submit form 990-EZ to the IRS. Organizations should file form 990-EZ by the 15th day of the 5th month after the organization’s accounting period ends (May 15 for a calendar-year filer). If the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, file on the next business day.

If an organization needs to request an automatic 3-month extension to file it should use form 8868, Application for Extension of Time To File an Exempt Organization Return. It should also use form 8868 to apply for an additional (not automatic) 3-month extension if the original three months was not enough time. To obtain this additional extension to file, the organization must show reasonable cause for the additional time requested.

What information do you need in order to complete this form?

You need to give information about the organization including the EIN, as well as the fiscal year’s revenues, expenses, and changes in net assets. Fill out all parts of the form carefully after reading the IRS instructions.
