IRS Form 990: Tax Returns for 501(c) Organizations

Switching gears again in PDFfiller‘s tax form review, we are moving on to the non-profit sector, starting with a look at IRS Form 990.

What is IRS Form 990? 

Form IRS 990 is an annual return report to be filed with the IRS by tax-exempt organizations, section 527 political organizations, and non-exempt charitable trusts. The form gives the IRS an overview of an organization’s activities, governance and finances. There are certain public members that depend on the Form 990 for the primary source of information about non-profit organizations.

Who must file an IRS 990 form? 

Form 990 should be filed by all organizations exempted from income tax under section 501(a), in cases where gross receipts are greater than or equal to $200,000 or the total value of the assets is greater than or equal to $500,000 at the end of the income tax year.

What other forms are needed when you file IRS 990 form?

When is IRS 990 due?

There is no common date on which you should file and submit Form 990. Rather, the nonprofit filing date is determined by the end of its fiscal year. The organizations filing the form must file by the fifteenth day of the fifth month after its fiscal year ends.

What information do you need in order to complete this form?
