More Time to File Your Individual Tax Return with Form 4868

This post was updated in April 2018

The same way businesses might need more time to file their 2017 tax return, individual tax payers have the right to request an extension, too. Form 4868 allows individuals to request more time to turn in their paperwork, but does not extend the time you have to pay owed taxes to the federal government.

Mark you calendar! The deadline to file your 2017 personal tax return is April 17th, 2018.

Just in case you’re running late, you can submit Form 4868 by April 17th, and the IRS will automatically grant you a six month extension to file your tax return, meaning it will now be due on October 15, 2018. Click here to fill out, save, and send Form 4868.
