If your business is involved with the use of heavy highway motor vehicles, you’ll need to file Form 2290. Every summer, vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more are subject to the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return.

Filling out Form 2290 and filing it with the IRS is quick and easy. Follow the steps below to ensure your 2290 submission is accepted.

What is tax form 2290 used for?

A truck owner uses Form 2290 to calculate and file taxes for use of public highways during the tax year. If you are a truck driver or are running a logistics business that uses trucks, you’ll need to fill out and file this form with the IRS.

Moreover, you have to fill out Form 2290 if the taxable gross weight of your motor vehicle has changed during the tax period. A change in weight may change your vehicle’s tax category.

When do I have to file Form 2290?

If you’ve used a heavy motor vehicle on a highway during the 2017-2018 year, you have to file Form 2290 before June 30, 2018. If your heavy motor vehicle was first used on a highway in July, file the form before August 31, 2018.

Do I have to attach other forms to my 2290?

The Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return has three parts: The first is the form which is used to calculate the sum of taxes. The second is the Schedule of Heavy Highway Vehicles and the third is the payment voucher (Form 2290-V). Fill out the payment voucher if you intend to pay the heavy highway use tax by money order or check.
