The summer is ending. School is starting. Your new job is beginning. You, and the rest of the US, are moving!
Several recent studies have mapped trends in interstate migration. One study by the NYTimes, which shows the origins and destinations of state population from the 1900s to 2012, indicates that Northeastern states that used to retain large shares of their residents are now losing them in droves to the South. In addition, states that formerly saw huge numbers of people leave for California are now seeing population gains from that state.
The research from Business Insider, which mapped the net domestic migration for each county in the U.S. from 2012-2013, confirms the general trend of people moving to the Southeast from all regions of the U.S. One of the more surprising findings was that there were also areas of high positive net migration into North Dakota and Eastern Montana – areas that traditionally have not seen high levels of influx from other states. One reason may be that this region correspond with the location of Bakken Formation, epicenter of the recent shale oil boom.
So what explains the increase in migration toward the South? According to an article by Joel Kotkin of Forbes, in part, it’s because economic growth in the South has outpaced the rest of the country. Southern states are business friendly in the sense that they often have lower taxes and less stringent regulations than their primary competitors in the Northeast or on the West Coast. They have also rebounded from the Great Recession more quickly and now offer not only more jobs, but lower housing prices, and a more affordable quality of life.
